Proven DI sales ideas

Solutions we place every day

Business overhead expense

Reimburses rent, utilities, employee salaries and other operating costs while the owner is disabled, so the business stays open. The owner can return to a healthy business, or sell one that has not lost value. Premiums are generally tax deductible.

Supplemental disability

Group LTD may not protect income enough. Benefits are taxable when the employer pays, bonus and incentive income is often excluded, the monthly cap can fall well below 60% of earnings, and coverage is not portable. Supplemental DI closes the gap.

Small group LTD and STD, guaranteed issue

For business owners with heart, cancer or diabetes history. Guaranteed issue plans for 2+ lives with LTD up to $10,000 a month and STD up to $1,500 a week, pre-existing condition benefits, a simple one-signature application, and the option to be 100% employee paid.

Individual own-occupation DI

Strong definitions, future increase options and residual benefits for physicians, dentists, attorneys, executives and other professionals.

Disability buy-out and key person

Fund a buy-sell agreement if an owner becomes disabled, or protect the business when a key employee cannot work.

High-limit and specialty

Excess and high-limit coverage for top earners, plus permanent total disability and loss-of-value coverage for professional athletes.

FAQ

Disability insurance questions

What is disability income insurance?

Disability income insurance replaces part of your paycheck if an illness or injury keeps you from working. Individual policies typically replace about 60% of earned income, and benefits are usually income-tax free when you pay the premium with after-tax dollars.

How likely is a disability?

According to the Social Security Administration, just over 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching full retirement age. Most long-term disabilities come from illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and back problems rather than accidents.

Is group disability coverage through work enough?

Often not. Group LTD commonly covers 60% of base salary only, caps the monthly benefit, excludes bonus and commission income, and benefits are taxable when the employer pays the premium. Coverage also ends when you leave the job. Individual or supplemental DI fills those gaps.

What does own-occupation mean?

An own-occupation definition pays benefits if you cannot perform the duties of your specific occupation, even if you could work in another job. It is the strongest definition and is important for physicians, dentists, attorneys and other specialists.

What is business overhead expense insurance?

Business overhead expense (BOE) insurance reimburses a business owner’s fixed operating costs, such as rent, utilities and staff salaries, while the owner is disabled, so the business can stay open. Premiums are generally tax deductible as a business expense.
